Best Bank National Award for United Bank of India

United Bank of India received the National Award for the Best Performing Bank in North East Region under REGP Scheme of KVIC for the year 2007-08. This is the second successive year that the Bank has been given this prestigious award.

In a glittering function organized at Vigyan Bhawan New Delhi, by Ministry of Micro Small & Medium Enterprises, Shri P. K. Gupta, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Bank has received this coveted award for outstanding performance from the Dr. Manmohan Singh Hon’ble Prime Minister of India today.

The Bank’s branch network is predominantly spread in the Eastern and North Eastern Region of the country. Out of total 1422 branches as on date, as many as 1175 branches accounting for 83% of the total network are located in these two regions. The number of branches in the North Eastern Region is 251.

The bank is convener of the State Level Bankers’ Committee for the States of West Bengal and Tripura. The bank has the lead bank responsibility in 10 districts of West Bengal, 12 districts in Assam, 4 districts in Tripura and 4 in Manipur.

On technology front, the Bank has taken rapid strides. Presently 596 branches, accounting for 81% of the Bank’s business are working on CBS platform. The Bank is extending IT based services like RTGS/NEFT, Cash Management Services and Internet Banking etc to its customers.

The bank has been actively participating in the employment generation programme sponsored by Khadi and Village Industries which help in generating large employment opportunities in the rural areas at a lower cost. The Bank has been actively supporting KVIC sector particularly in Micro and Small units in the Eastern & North Eastern Parts of the country thereby generating large employment opportunities.

Under KVIC Scheme, during the year 2007-08, the Bank has extended loans of around Rs.70 crores, out of which Rs.18 crores is accounted for by North Eastern Region. This has resulted in creating employment for over 47000 persons, out of which over 12,500 are accounted for by North Eastern Region for units financed by the Bank, KVIC has approved margin money to the extent of Rs.30 crore.

United Bank of India is the first Nationalized Bank having launched Photo Personalized Biometric Smart Card in the state of West Bengal for farmers, Self Help Groups and economically weaker section as a bold step towards fulfillment of Financial Inclusion. The Bank has opened about 7 Lakh No-Frill savings accounts so far.

The Bank has set up three RUDSETIs (Rural Development & Self Employment Training Institute) in the state of West Bengal for imparting vocational training to unemployed youth in rural areas. The Bank extends credit assistance to the trained youth as also financial consultancy.
